PADI Open Water Diver: The Standard First Certification
If you’ve never been scuba certified and want the standard recreational scuba certification, PADI Open Water Diver is usually the best place to start.
The course combines scuba knowledge development, skill practice, and four open-water training dives. No previous scuba certification is required. PADI Open Water Diver is the primary entry-level certification for divers who want to continue diving with another certified diver within the limits of their training and experience.

PADI Scuba Diver: A Shorter Certification Option
PADI Scuba Diver is designed for people who want to become certified but do not have enough time to complete the full Open Water Diver course.
At Banyan Tree Divers, you can complete the Scuba Diver course in one day, including two ocean training dives. After certification, PADI Scuba Divers may dive to a maximum depth of 40 feet / 12 meters while under the supervision of a PADI Professional.
Who Is Scuba Diver Best For?
This course may make sense if you have very limited vacation time but still want to earn a PADI certification.
The tradeoff is that Scuba Diver is more restrictive than Open Water Diver. If your long-term goal is to dive more independently, Open Water Diver is the better destination. Scuba Diver training can also serve as a step toward completing Open Water Diver later.

PADI Open Water Referral: Finish Your Certification in Maui
A referral course is for students who have already started Open Water training somewhere else.
Typically, you complete the knowledge-development and confined-water portions of the PADI Open Water Diver course with another dive center or instructor, then travel to Maui to complete the required open-water training dives. PADI describes this as a standard way to divide Open Water training between locations.
Banyan Tree Divers’ Referral course includes four open-water training dives in Maui. You must provide the appropriate referral documentation from your previous instructor or dive center before completing the certification.
Who Is a Referral Course Best For?
Choose a referral if you’ve already completed the academic and confined-water portions of your Open Water training and want to finish the ocean dives while you’re in Maui.

PADI Advanced Open Water Diver: Build on Your Existing Certification
Already Open Water certified? PADI Advanced Open Water Diver is designed to help you gain experience, develop additional skills, and try different types of diving with an instructor.
The course includes five Adventure Dives. Deep and Underwater Navigation are required, while the remaining three dives are selected from available Adventure Dive options. PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification qualifies adult divers to dive to a maximum of 100 feet / 30 meters, within the limits of their training and experience.
Who Is Advanced Open Water Best For?
Choose Advanced Open Water if you’re already certified and want to feel more comfortable with navigation, deeper diving, and other underwater experiences.
You do not need to accumulate a huge number of dives before taking Advanced Open Water. PADI requires Open Water Diver certification as the starting qualification.

Scuba Diver vs. Open Water Diver
The biggest difference is what your certification allows you to do afterward.
PADI Scuba Diver is a shorter certification with a maximum depth of 40 feet / 12 meters and requires diving under the supervision of a PADI Professional.
PADI Open Water Diver involves more training and is the standard entry-level certification for divers who want to dive with another certified buddy within the limits of their training and experience.
If you have the time and know you want to continue scuba diving regularly, Open Water Diver will usually give you more flexibility. If time is the deciding factor, Scuba Diver can provide a shorter certification pathway.
Open Water vs. Open Water Referral
Both routes ultimately lead toward the same PADI Open Water Diver certification. The difference is where you complete the earlier portions of the course.
With the full Open Water course, Banyan Tree Divers handles your training pathway in Maui. With a Referral, you’ve already completed the required knowledge development and confined-water work elsewhere and arrive with documentation to finish the open-water dives.
A referral can be a good choice when you want to complete the knowledge-development and confined-water portions before your vacation and save your Maui training time for the ocean.
Do PADI Certifications Expire?
PADI recreational scuba certifications do not expire. Once you’ve earned the certification, you do not need to repeat the original course simply because time has passed.
Your skills and comfort can become less current, however, particularly after an extended break from diving. Returning divers should consider their recent experience and whether a refresher would help before joining a regular guided dive.
What If You’re Not Ready to Get Certified?
You do not have to commit to a certification course to find out whether you enjoy scuba diving.
Banyan Tree Divers offers Beginner Scuba Diving in Ka’anapali for guests with no previous scuba certification or experience. Your instructor will introduce the equipment, teach the essential skills you’ll use, and guide you into the ocean at a comfortable pace.
Beginner groups are limited to four non-certified divers per instructor.
Already Certified and Want to Dive?
If you already have the certification you need, you don’t need another course to enjoy scuba diving in Maui.
Certified divers can choose guided shore diving in Ka’anapali, Mala Wharf diving in Lahaina, refresher dives, night diving, or private scuba experiences depending on certification, comfort, and current conditions.
