What Is a PADI Open Water Referral Course?

A referral allows you to begin your Open Water training with one dive center and complete the open-water portion with another. It’s a great option if you want to complete your academics and confined-water skills at home, then finish your certification dives while visiting Maui.

Before starting your Referral Course with Banyan Tree Divers, you must have completed the required academic and confined-water portions of your training and provide the appropriate referral documentation from your previous instructor.

Complete Your Four Open-Water Training Dives

Your Maui Referral Course includes four open-water training dives completed with a professional instructor. You’ll put the skills you’ve already learned into practice while gaining experience diving in a real ocean environment.

Your instructor will review required skills, guide you through each training dive, and evaluate your progress as you work toward completing your Open Water certification.

After completing all course requirements, you’ll earn your Open Water Diver certification.

What to Expect During Your Referral Course

The Referral Course includes four open-water training dives, typically completed as two dives per day over two days.

You’ll meet your instructor at a pre-arranged West Maui dive location, where you’ll review the day’s training plan and prepare your scuba equipment. Your instructor will select appropriate dive locations based on ocean conditions and the needs of your course.

During each dive, you’ll complete required skills while developing your buoyancy, underwater awareness, and confidence as a new diver.

What Do I Need Before Starting My Referral Dives?

Before your first training dive, Banyan Tree Divers must receive the required referral documentation showing the training you’ve already completed with your previous instructor or dive center.

Please arrange for your completed and signed referral paperwork to be provided before your course begins. If you completed PADI eLearning as part of your training, provide your completion information as requested.

Before scuba diving, every non-certified diver must complete the required PADI medical questionnaire honestly and accurately. Depending on your answers, additional evaluation or medical clearance from a physician may be required before diving.

Finish Your Scuba Certification in Maui

Completing your referral dives in Maui lets you finish the academic and confined-water portions of your training before vacation, then spend your time here completing the ocean dives required for certification.

Your training takes place from shore at West Maui dive sites, selected based on conditions and course needs, allowing you to develop your skills in a real ocean environment while completing your certification.

What Comes After Your Open Water Certification?
