Become a More Experienced Scuba Diver
The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course is designed to help certified divers gain experience while exploring different areas of scuba diving. Instead of repeating your Open Water training, you’ll complete five Adventure Dives focused on developing specific skills and expanding your underwater experience.
Every Advanced Open Water course includes a Deep Adventure Dive and an Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive. You’ll then choose three additional dives based on your interests, available dive sites, ocean conditions, and course options.
There’s no need to wait after earning your Open Water certification—you can continue into Advanced Open Water when you’re ready to build your skills and experience.
What Dives Can I Choose for Advanced Open Water?
Deep Adventure Dive
Develop experience diving beyond your Open Water training depth while learning about the considerations involved in deeper diving. The Deep Adventure Dive is required for Advanced Open Water certification.
Underwater Navigation
Improve your ability to navigate underwater using natural references and a compass. Underwater Navigation is the second required Adventure Dive for the course.
Choose Three Additional Adventure Dives
Your remaining three dives allow you to explore other areas of scuba diving. Available options may include:
- Peak Performance Buoyancy
- Fish Identification
- Underwater Photography
- Wreck Diving
- Night Diving
Available Adventure Dives depend on conditions, scheduling, dive-site suitability, and course requirements. Your instructor will help you choose the appropriate combination for your Advanced course.
Experience Deeper Diving in Maui
One of the biggest milestones in the Advanced Open Water course is gaining experience at greater depths. Your Deep Adventure Dive introduces you to the planning, awareness, and skills involved in diving beyond the maximum depth of your Open Water certification.
After successfully earning your PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification, your training allows you to dive to a maximum depth of 100 feet within the limits of your experience and training.
Depending on ocean conditions and course planning, West Maui dive sites such as Ka’anapali may provide opportunities for deeper-water training.
Explore Different Maui Diving Environments
Your Advanced course allows you to experience Maui from a new perspective while developing specific diving skills. Depending on your selected Adventure Dives and ocean conditions, your training may include reef diving in Ka’anapali, deeper-water environments, underwater navigation, or exploring the structure at Mala Wharf.
Dive sites are selected according to conditions and the training objectives for each Adventure Dive.
What to Expect During Your Advanced Open Water Course
You’ll complete five Adventure Dives with a professional instructor over two to three days. Your course includes the required Deep and Underwater Navigation dives, along with three additional Adventure Dives selected as part of your course plan.
Dive sites and meeting locations are chosen according to ocean conditions and the training objectives for each dive. Your instructor will review the course plan with you and help structure the dives around your training needs.
Rental scuba equipment is included.
