Experience Maui’s Underwater World After Dark

Night diving reveals a completely different side of the reef. As daylight fades, familiar dive sites change and nocturnal marine life begins to emerge. Your dive light illuminates the reef as you explore the underwater environment with an experienced guide.

Depending on the dive site, conditions, and wildlife activity, you may encounter Hawaiian green sea turtles, eels, octopuses, lobsters, crabs, tropical fish, and other marine life that is active after sunset. White-Tip Reef Sharks may also be seen. Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed.

Explore Mala Wharf After Dark

Mala Wharf is a distinctive Lahaina dive site with underwater structure that takes on an entirely different character at night. If you’ve experienced Mala Wharf during the day, night diving offers a new perspective on the site.

As darkness falls, your dive light can reveal nocturnal creatures moving across the reef and around the underwater structure. Depending on conditions and wildlife activity, you may encounter octopuses, lobsters, crabs, moray and conger eels, sleeping Hawaiian green sea turtles, tropical fish, and other marine life.

The underwater environment, dive route, and conditions can vary from night to night, and your guide will plan the dive accordingly.

What to Expect on Your Night Dive

You’ll meet your guide at the pre-arranged dive location in Lahaina for a detailed safety and dive briefing. Your rental scuba equipment and dive light will be ready for you when you arrive.

Before entering the water, your guide will review the dive plan, communication procedures, site conditions, and important considerations for diving after dark. Once everyone is comfortable and ready, you’ll enter the ocean from shore and begin your guided night dive.

Your route, depth, and overall dive plan will be based on the conditions and the group’s experience.

Start with a Twilight Dive

Want to spend even more time underwater? Choose the Twilight Dive + Night Dive package and experience the reef as it transitions from daylight into darkness.

Starting before sunset lets you experience the underwater environment in changing light before continuing your guided night dive.

The exact dive plan and conditions may vary.

Certification & Recent Diving Experience

Night diving is for certified scuba divers. Because diving after dark requires comfort with scuba equipment and underwater skills, recent diving experience is recommended.

If you haven’t been diving recently or feel rusty, consider booking a Scuba Refresher Dive before your night diving experience.

Not a Certified Diver Yet?

You don’t need scuba certification to experience Maui underwater. If you’re new to scuba diving, explore our Beginner Scuba Dive experience and discover the reef with a professional instructor.
