Scuba Diving in Maui Under Darkness
Scuba diving in the dark is one of the best ocean experiences in Maui. You meet your guide at sunset in Lahaina and walk into the ocean during the final minutes of twilight, searching for turtles, sharks, and eels. Book through Banyan Tree Divers to learn why even seasoned scuba divers in Hawaii are fascinated by Maui’s exquisite array of nocturnal life.
Please note that night diving requires a scuba certification, and your diving history should show that you logged a dive in the last six months to one year. Beginner divers can instead start by taking introductory lessons or a PADI course.
Mala Wharf in Lahaina ranks as a favorite spot for a night dive. If you have ever experienced the thrill of Mala Wharf on a sunny day, you will find this site changes into a new playground under Maui’s darkness. You can see invertebrates like octopus, lobster, and crab shuffle past coral polyps, filtering plankton in the light of your dive torch. Mala Wharf features wonderfully eerie caverns that host brightly colored soft corals and schools of tropical fish. Resident sea turtles sleep under the broken pier as large Conger Eels scour the corals and ocean floor for a much-anticipated evening meal. Sometimes, White-Tip Reef Sharks make an appearance, too!
What to Expect Night Diving
You meet your scuba instructor at a designated dive site about an hour before sunset for a safety briefing. Your pre-rented gear and dive light will be provided and ready for you. As darkness falls, you will enter the ocean to begin your night diving adventure in Lahaina, Hawaii.
